How is net salary calculated in France?
Between the gross salary in your contract and the amount paid into your account, two deductions apply: employee social contributions, then income tax withheld at source (prélèvement à la source).
- Gross minus contributions gives net before tax. Employee contributions mostly fund your pension, basic and supplementary, plus your company's health insurance and provident cover. On top come two social levies, taken on 98.25% of gross: the CSG (Contribution Sociale Généralisée, the General Social Contribution, 9.2%), which funds social protection such as health insurance and family benefits, and the CRDS (Contribution au Remboursement de la Dette Sociale, 0.5%), which pays down the social security debt. In total, these deductions come to about 22% of gross for a non-cadre employee, 25% for a cadre (managerial staff) and 15% in the civil service.
- Tax is based on the taxable net (net imposable). It is slightly higher than the net paid: it adds back the part of the CSG that is not deductible from income tax (2.4 points of the 9.2) and the CRDS, plus the employer's share of the health insurance.
- Net before tax minus the withholding tax gives net after tax. Each month, your employer applies your withholding rate to the taxable net. The calculator estimates that rate from the 2026 income tax brackets; you can also enter the rate shown on your payslip or in your impots.gouv.fr account.
Contribution rates by status
The calculator starts from these average rates. Your actual rate depends on your collective agreement, your health insurance and your salary level: use “Check against my payslip” to find yours.
| Status | Contributions (% of gross) | Taxable net (% of gross) |
|---|---|---|
| Non-cadre | 22% | 80% |
| Cadre (managerial) | 25% | 82% |
| Civil service | 15% | 83% |
2026 French income tax brackets
The 2026 brackets apply to income earned in 2025. Each rate only applies to the part of income within its bracket, per household share (quotient familial).
| Taxable income per share | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to €11,600 | 0% |
| €11,601 to €29,579 | 11% |
| €29,580 to €84,577 | 30% |
| €84,578 to €181,917 | 41% |
| Over €181,917 | 45% |
Before the brackets apply, income is reduced by the 10% allowance for professional expenses (at least €509, at most €14,555), then divided by the number of household shares: one for a single person, two for a married or PACS couple, half a share for each of the first two children and a full share from the third.
The décote then reduces the tax of low-income households: it applies when the tax before décote is under €1,982 for a single person and €3,277 for a couple. The calculator does not cap the benefit of the quotient familial: with children and a high income, it may underestimate the tax.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a net salary to gross?
In “I'm entering my”, choose “Net before tax” or “Net after tax”, then enter the amount: the calculator finds the matching gross, with the same breakdown.
How do I work out my hourly net salary?
Choose “/ hour” to enter an hourly rate, or read the “Hour” row of the “By period” table. The calculation uses your weekly hours: 35 hours a week make 151.67 hours a month (35 × 52 ÷ 12).
How much is the SMIC minimum wage after contributions?
Since 1 June 2026, the SMIC is €12.31 gross per hour, that is €1,867.02 gross a month for 35 hours a week and about €1,478 net before tax, according to service-public.gouv.fr (in French).
How do I count a 13th-month bonus?
Enter 13 (or 14) in “Months / year”. A monthly salary you enter is then one payment and the yearly total is multiplied by the number of months; a yearly salary you enter is spread over those payments. The estimated withholding rate is based on the whole year's income, including the 13th or 14th month, then applied to each payment.
Is the estimated rate the one on my payslip?
Not necessarily. Your rate is set by the tax authorities from your latest tax return and all your household's income; married and PACS couples also get an individual rate by default. For a closer result, choose “My rate” and enter the rate shown on your payslip.
Is the result exact?
It is an estimate: actual amounts depend on your collective agreement, your health insurance, overtime and benefits in kind. “Check against my payslip” finds your actual rates from a payslip.
Are my amounts saved?
No. The calculation runs in your browser: the amounts you enter are neither saved nor sent. Audience measurement counts visits, without cookies, and never receives any amount.
How do I share a result?
“Copy a link to this result” copies an address that reopens the calculator with your settings. They sit after the # sign, a part of the address the browser never sends to the server.
